LOVELY ANTIQUE TETE JUMEAU / MECHANICAL/ CLOSED MOUTH / PIERCED EARS / DAMAGED. This is an 18 Tete Jumeau possessing exceptional beauty and is highly photogenic; however, she has sustained damage to her bisque head on the very top edge of the rim on the right side of her head resulting in three descending hairlines. Her mohair wig however, does cover the damaged area effectively. Her compensating features are that she has a closed mouth, pierced ears, a fine quality bisque, dark blue glass stationary paperweight eyes, and delicately painted brows and eye lashes. The natural spacing of her brows seems to give her a more realistic appearance, as seen on earlier examples. She still retains her original cork pate and has the identifying red stamp on the back of her head. This Jumeau has a mechanical aspect to her. I believe she was produced during the innovative years 1887 and 1889, when the firm of Jumeau conservatively incorporated some of the inventiveness of the time.
They produced dolls that talked, walked, or could throw kisses. However, Jumeau wanted to intentionally keep their dolls as simple toys for children, .. They did however, supply heads to companies that did make them, such as: Vichy, Decamps and Lambert. Inside the torso of this Tete Jumeau is a mechanical mechanism inserted into the lower abdomen that connects and involves her upper legs, although the way in which it functioned, how or if it affected movement, is not clear. I wanted to show many more photos that I felt were important because 12 is just not enough. Therefore, please ask for any photos that you may need, if it is important to you. One aspect that was impossible for me to photograph, because it is not visible on the surface, is the part of the mechanism inside the upper rounded part of the legs, (which have the slot for stringing), where a single rod.. Or possibly even a separate rod for each upper leg, runs horizontally through them; and engages both upper legs at the point of the highest part of the inner thighs, just under her body, where they actually meet in the middle as small metal disks that are set right next to each other, connected side by side; and in some way controls and limits the range of motion of her legs and how they function, particularly when she sits. As you will notice in some of the photos, when her torso is opened, an attempt was made by a prior owner to make a repair to the inner right sidewall of her torso utilizing a modeling material to strengthen it; and to repair a hole that came through to the outside. (This is as I bought her). It was never mentioned that she even had a mechanical aspect to her, .. So it was quite a surprise when she arrived to me. If some one wants to restore her, it will need to be addressed properly. Over all though, her condition is good. Her jointing is tight and holds any pose.
The paint surface of her body and limbs, certainly shows age and wear with some areas that are good and others having scrapes, some gouges, some small dents, chipped off paint and a little paint added, all in various states of condition but necessary to mention. The blue lettering on her lower back identifying that she was made by Jumeau, is very faint but can still be discerned. Her mohair wig is NOT old. Her main garments however are antique and hand made.Only her small underpants are original to her. As I do want you to make an informed decision..
