She is about 140 years old and is aging gracefully. Lighted perfect porcelain head shows she has no cracks. Lines above her ears are mold lines. There's a tiny 1/32 chip where the nursing mechanism key enters her head. Red rubber ball in her nursing mechanism is no longer soft & flexible.
Some of the straw in her original matching hat is disintegrating. Left hand is missing one finger. Dress material has some wearing in the chest area. We were told not to fix the missing finger as that repair would decrease the value to a professional antique collector. Her plate has the initials BRU Jne on the left and NT on the right and a 4 on the back of her head.
All photos were taken this week. The shoes are stamped with the oval Bru Paris embossed stamp with the number 3 on the toes of the soles. Her provenance is a rich one! She has lived with one no smoking family since 1960. Her purple ribbon reads UNITED FEDERATION of DOLL CLUBS, Inc.6th ANNUAL EXIBITION 1955 Boston, Mass. Thought to be a "Whistling Bru" because of her open mouth (back then) before there was the internet and international doll historians posting facts, photos, and doll historys. This Beautiful Bru is from my wife's doll collection, inherited from her mother who was a doll maker and collector in the Hollyhocks Doll Club in Southern CA in the 1960s-70s. Ask us for more info! French Bru Dolls History 1866 -1899+ QUOTES.
The Bru Jne & Cie company was located in France and manufactured some of the most beautiful and treasured bisque dolls that have ever been made. Dolls are commonly referred to as "Bru" dolls, but nothing about them is common. Want to make an antique doll collector faint, mention you bought a Bru doll for less than a few thousand dollars and have some smelling salts handy or they may think you are referring to, just a pair of shoes. Under Chevrot's leadership, the company name changed to Bru Jne.
Which stands for Bru Junior and Company. Henri Chevrot added a new body for the Bru Jne head. Usually this body is referred to as the "Chevrot Body". It features a slimmed down tummy and hips, lower legs of wood, and pin joints at the elbows & knees.
The lower arms were bisque with a few exceptions of wood. During the time of Chevrot's ownership the Bru dolls that we all know and love were produced. It was the fine craftsmanship and wonderful designs of Chevrot's Bru Jne dolls that won so many gold medals. These are the Bru dolls that stand in our cases and represent the the ultimate in doll making.
