This is a beautiful old doll that we acquired that appears to have all of her original clothing from the late 19th century... Well, we added new stockings and shoes, but the rest is original and we can attest this from the week the clothes spent in a jar of "Perk" and "Boost" solution, trying to get the 19th century's worth of grime out of them! We tried to save the wig, but when we attempted to remove it for cleaning, it crumbled into clots of dust. We replaced it with an unused, old wig of very dark brown mohair, that is styled in sausage curls with the sides gathered to the back and tied with a pale pink ribbon to match the pink ribbon rose at the bottom front of her dress.
She has set brown glass eyes. Her face is very pretty and has lovely coloring although there are some cheek rubs, typical of of a doll this age. She has the typical plaster pate of a Kestner doll and she is marked with a Number 4. Luckily, the defect is in the back, under the hair, so to be virtually unnoticeable.
Her dress is made of very fine batiste, in a very creamy antiqued color. It may have been white at one time, but the material has aged. It is basically a shirt waisted dress with a button placket decorating the front. There is a tuck on either side of the buttons.
On the skirt of the dress there is an arch of embroidered batiste on a flap attached to the body of the skirt. At the bottom of the arches, there are two rows of flat lace, topped by a pale pink ribbon rose, as mentioned before. It should be mentioned there is some mild melting of this dress on the very front with a single long line and a small line on the right sleeve. Underneath, is a matching embroidered fine batiste half-slip which is edged in decorative O-shaped lace. The pantalettes are the same fine batiste and are trimmed with matching lace to that of the skirt. The doll sports new patterned cream stockings and high buttoned shoes. In addition, she has a blueblue of happiness pin on her shoulder, carrying a tiny pearl.
Despite her small flaw, this gorgeous doll would be a wonderful addition to anyone's doll collection. 15 Antique Kestner Closed Mouth Doll Marked #4 -As Is 9" is in sale since Tuesday, July 13, 2021. This item is in the category "Dolls & Bears\Dolls\Antique (Pre-1930)\Bisque\German".
